Built for Residential Trade Businesses in Perth
Hypotential was built inside a real residential trade business in Perth. Residential trade businesses operate differently to corporate companies. They rely on job flow, field teams, quoting discipline and operational clarity. Hypotential is designed specifically for that environment, not generic business advice repackaged for trades.
Structured support for trade business owners
Whether you’re stepping off the tools, building your first team, or stabilising a growing operation, Hypotential provides practical guidance built from lived experience. The goal isn’t growth at all costs, it’s building a business that works properly, both on site and behind the scenes.
Business Owner. Husband. Dad.
I'm a residential trade business owner, a husband, and a dad to two young kids, and those roles constantly shape how I think about business. When you're leading a growing company, the pressure doesn't switch off at the end of the day. Payroll, jobs, customer issues, team decisions, it all follows you home. At the same time, you're trying to be present for school drop-offs, weekends, and the people who matter most. That tension is real, and most trade founders feel it. Hypotential was built from that lived experience, not just from scaling a business, but from learning how to build one that works without consuming everything else.
Started as a solo electrician with one ute
Smartfix began as a small electrical business in Perth, run by Kane Tyler Smith out of his garage. One van, one set of tools, and a steady flow of residential work. Like most trade businesses at the start, the early years were hands-on and the learning curve was steep.
Growing team and early structure
Within two years the business had grown to more than seven staff and $1.3M in annual revenue. These early stages focused heavily on building the foundations for structure, systems, processes, and leadership that would support future growth.
Expanding services and scaling the team
By 2022 Smartfix had grown to more than 24 staff and $6.3M+ in annual revenue. This was also the year the company expanded beyond electrical and introduced plumbing services, marking the beginning of its transition into a multi-trade residential business
Rapid growth and new service divisions
Smartfix continued to grow rapidly, reaching more than 71 staff and $19.9M in annual revenue. As the business expanded, property maintenance services were introduced, further strengthening its position as a full-service residential trade provider. With growth came greater responsibilities, higher overheads, greater operational complexity, and leadership challenges that forced the business to mature quickly.
Building the future of trade business coaching
After years of building Smartfix, Kane launched Hypotential to share the systems, frameworks and lessons learned along the way. Hypotential was created to help other residential trade business owners build stronger structure, better leadership and sustainable growth, without having to learn everything the hard way.
Who we are
Hypotential is led by people who are actively running and growing a residential trade business. The lessons shared here aren't theory. They come from real decisions, real pressure, and real growth.
Kane Tyler Smith
Kane built Smartfix from a single ute in Perth to $30M+ within eight years. He’s a husband and father of two, and understands the pressure of growing a trade business while keeping family and standards intact. His focus is structure, leadership and building trade businesses that scale properly.
Aisha Derrick
Aisha leads brand and marketing strategy across Smartfix's multi-trade operations. Her focus is long-term positioning, SEO and structured growth, making deliberate decisions rather than chasing trends. She's passionate about helping trade businesses build visibility properly, with clear strategy behind every move.
What makes Hypotential different
We don't do hype. We do what works.
Built from the tools up
Everything inside Hypotential comes from real residential trade experience. The systems and decisions weren’t created in a boardroom, they were built while running jobs, managing teams, handling cash flow pressure, and growing a trade business in the real world.
Systems that hold under pressure
There’s no motivational content here. No hype. No abstract business talk. We focus on clear processes, documented workflows, financial visibility, and leadership structure, the kind of things that reduce daily firefighting and give your team consistency. If it doesn’t work on a jobsite, it doesn’t belong here.
Growth that doesn’t cost you everything
Not every business needs to double in size. Some need stronger margins. Some need better delegation. Some need less pressure at home. We don’t push growth for the sake of it. We build structure first, then scale only when the business can genuinely support it. The aim is a business that works, commercially and personally.
