You're a great chippy. Running the business is a different job entirely. Hypotential helps Perth carpentry businesses price properly, hire well and build a business that keeps running when you're on the tools.

Sound Familiar?

The problems every Perth chippy hits

These show up when you're running a carpentry business in the Perth market, and they compound fast if you don't get on top of them.

Where Are You Now?

Three stages. One path.

Most carpentry business owners are at one of three stages. Each one needs a different type of support, and each maps to a different Hypotential membership.

Phase 1

Operator: you are the business

You're on the tools most days and revenue flows through you personally. This is where most carpentry businesses start. The goal at this phase is to separate yourself from the day to day, get your pricing right, document what you do, and build the structure that lets you step back.

  • Know exactly what every job costs and what to charge
  • Quoting, scheduling and invoicing that doesn't rely on memory
  • A clear picture of where your time is actually going
  • The foundation to hire your first person with confidence
Phase 2

Team leader: you manage the work

You have people on the tools and the jobs are running, but you're still the bottleneck. Every decision, every problem, every quote still comes back to you. At this phase, the work is building systems and people that can operate without your constant input.

  • Processes your team can follow without being told twice
  • Quality that holds up when you're off site
  • Hiring that sticks, with the right people brought on the right way
  • A business that makes real profit as it grows
Phase 3

Business owner: you build the strategy

Your team runs the operation. You're off the tools and you're not putting out fires every day. At this phase, your time goes into the decisions that set where the business goes: new services, key hires, better margins, or what comes next.

  • Clear visibility across the whole operation
  • A leadership structure that works without you in every decision
  • Decisions made with data, backed by experience
  • A business worth something without you on the tools

You're Not Alone

Kane Tyler Smith · Founder, Smartfix & Hypotential

You don't have to do it alone

If you're a chippy in Perth who's gone out on your own, feeling the weight of running a business with no one to call, quoting in the dark and hoping the money adds up at the end of the month, I know exactly what your world looks like right now.

I started Smartfix with one ute in 2018 and grew it to 130+ staff across a lot of different trades. Along the way I employed and managed carpenters and cabinet makers, alongside electricians, air con techs and the rest of the team. The trade side was never the hard part. The business side was, and I created Hypotential so no chippy in Perth has to work it out alone the way I did.

I know the WA carpentry market

I built Hypotential from running a real multi-trade business in Perth, competing in the same market you do.

  • Timber and material prices that move between quote and build
  • Builders, subbies and direct homeowner work, and how to price each
  • Perth sand, heat and weather, and how they affect your schedule
  • Finding and keeping good chippies when builders and FIFO are hiring

FAQ

Common questions

How should a carpenter price decks and pergolas?

Work out the full cost: timber, fixings, hire gear, labour, travel and a buffer for the things you find once you start. Then add your margin. Write variations into the quote, so extra work always gets charged.

When should a chippy hire an apprentice?

When the work is steady enough to keep two people busy and you've got time to teach. An apprentice slows you down before they speed you up, so get your quoting and scheduling sorted first.

How do I charge for variations on a carpentry job?

Agree the process before the job starts: anything outside the quote gets priced and signed off before you do it. A quick text with the price and a yes back is enough. It's the unrecorded variations that eat the profit.

Is business coaching worth it for a carpentry business?

It's worth it if it changes how you price and run jobs, and pays for itself in margin. Look for someone who's run a trade business in Perth, because WA has its own material and labour problems.
