electricians

You're a good sparky. Running the business is a different job entirely. Hypotential helps Perth electricians price properly, hire well and build an electrical business that keeps running when you're on the tools.

Sound Familiar?

The problems every Perth sparky hits

These show up when you're running an electrical business in the Perth market, and they compound fast if you don't get on top of them.

Where Are You Now?

Three stages. One path.

Most electrical business owners are at one of three stages. Each one needs a different type of support, and each maps to a different Hypotential membership.

Phase 1

Operator: you are the business

You're on the tools most days and revenue flows through you personally. This is where most electrical businesses start. The goal at this phase is to separate yourself from the day to day, get your pricing right, document what you do, and build the structure that lets you step back.

  • Know exactly what every job costs and what to charge
  • Quoting, scheduling and invoicing that doesn't rely on memory
  • A clear picture of where your time is actually going
  • The foundation to hire your first person with confidence
Phase 2

Team leader: you manage the work

You have people on the tools and the jobs are running, but you're still the bottleneck. Every decision, every problem, every quote still comes back to you. At this phase, the work is building systems and people that can operate without your constant input.

  • Processes your team can follow without being told twice
  • Quality that holds up when you're off site
  • Hiring that sticks, with the right people brought on the right way
  • A business that makes real profit as it grows
Phase 3

Business owner: you build the strategy

Your team runs the operation. You're off the tools and you're not putting out fires every day. At this phase, your time goes into the decisions that set where the business goes: new services, key hires, better margins, or what comes next.

  • Clear visibility across the whole operation
  • A leadership structure that works without you in every decision
  • Decisions made with data, backed by experience
  • A business worth something without you on the tools

You're Not Alone

Kane Tyler Smith · Founder, Smartfix & Hypotential

You don't have to do it alone

If you're a sparky in Perth who's gone out on your own, feeling the weight of running a business with no one to call, quoting in the dark and hoping the money adds up at the end of the month, I know exactly what your world looks like right now.

I'm an electrician by trade. I started Smartfix with one ute and a set of tools in my garage in 2018, and electrical is still the core of the business today. Along the way Smartfix grew to 130+ staff and I employed and managed plumbers, gas fitters, carpenters, tilers, painters, plasterers, roofers and more. I created Hypotential so no sparky in Perth has to work out the business side alone the way I did.

Built For Electricians

Where I help electrical businesses

I'm a sparky who grew one ute into a 130+ staff multi-trade business in Perth. Electrical was where Smartfix started, so this is coaching from someone who's run the electrical side for real.

01

Pricing electrical work

Stop underpricing callouts, fit-offs and switchboard jobs. Build real margin into every quote, including your travel and admin time.

02

Hiring & Apprentices

When to put on your first apprentice or licensed sparky, what to pay when FIFO is competing for them, and how to train them to your standard.

03

Systems & Scheduling

Job management, quoting and compliance paperwork systems so the admin stops eating your nights and nothing falls through the cracks.

04

Growth & Margins

Know your numbers, win better work and grow the profit along with the turnover. A clear plan for where the business goes next.

I know the WA electrical market

I built Hypotential from running a real multi-trade business in Perth, competing in the same market you do.

  • FIFO and the mines competing for licensed electricians
  • Compliance paperwork and the admin load that comes with every job
  • Builder, real estate and direct homeowner work, and how to price each
  • Solar, batteries and EV chargers, and where they fit in a residential electrical business

FAQ

Common questions

How much should a Perth electrician charge per hour?

There's no single right number. Work out your real cost per hour first: wages, vehicle, insurance, tools, admin and the hours you can't bill. Then add the margin you need on top. Most sparkies I talk to are charging off what the next bloke charges, and that's how jobs end up breaking even.

When should an electrician hire their first apprentice?

When you've got steady work for two people, and time to actually train someone. An apprentice slows you down before they speed you up. If you're already flat out with no systems, sort out your quoting and scheduling first, or the apprentice will learn your bad habits.

How do I stop my electrical business relying on me?

Write down how you do the jobs you do most, then hand them over one at a time. Start with the admin, because that's usually what's eating your nights. The goal is a business where the quote, the booking and the invoice happen without you touching them.

Is business coaching worth it for a small electrical business?

It's worth it if it changes how you price and run the business, and pays for itself in margin. I'd look for someone who's actually run a trade business in Perth, because the WA market has its own problems: FIFO, distance and seasonal swings.

Should my electrical business do solar and batteries?

Only if you can price it properly and do it well. Adding a new service is a growth decision, and it brings new costs, training and admin. I've seen what happens when a business spreads across too many services too fast.
